Will you write my artist statement?
No. We can read it, make suggestions, and help you edit it for clarity and grammatical errors, but it is unethical to put words into an artist’s mouth. Artist statements are requested for the purpose of hearing directly from the artist and to provide too much assistance would be deceptive.
Why are you named Visual Retention?
Well, honestly, there are so few domains left out there … and after working on Educational Programming Materials for a Raymond Loewy exhibition traveled by ExhibitsUSA we encountered an interview from the designer describing a necessity for a “high index of visual retention” in his basic design concepts. Sure, visual retention it sounds a bit wordy, but retaining a visual memory is imperative to the sustainability of art. One needn’t elaborate on the inundation of emerging artists, galleries, and art institutions to understand that there are only a small percentage of those who are successful in reaching even their own, targeted, audiences.
Can I pay you to write a critical review of my show?
No. But we do write catalog essays, and we can promote your show to other writers that may be interested in covering it, but there are no guarantees. Reviews are inherently critical and it is unethical to commission a review, as it is the opinion of a critic. If artists could purchase such things, then critics would lose credibility with their publishers and no longer receive solicitations. We only accept payment for reviews that originate with (hopefully impartial) magazines.
Can I buy your mailing list?
No. Our mailing list and our client mailing lists are not, and never will be, sold. You wouldn’t want your list sold, would you? But we can build a list for you. We do this by designating your target audience and researching your relevant contacts … far better than acquiring a list that was not designed for your use.
Who works for Visual Retention?
Every project is directly supervised by owner Allison Zimmer, but we do hire consultants to assist us as needed. So it varies, greatly, depending on the demands of each project. To maintain flexibility and affordability we are currently operating remotely with limited staff, but are prepared for expansion to meet the demands of larger projects.
Are payment plans available?
Yes. We can arrange a schedule of payments if you are unable to initially meet the proposed job estimate. After receiving the estimate, please contact us with your concern and we can discuss graduated payment arrangements. These arrangements must be arranged prior to job acceptance, as it will determine its placement in our project timeline. Please keep in mind that enrollment in a payment plan can delay the completion of your project, and we cannot guarantee a payment plan for every proposal. All payment plans will require non-refundable deposit, and will be used directly toward your estimate.
Can I trade artwork for your services?
No. Please understand that this is a common solicitation, and has nothing to do with our opinion of the work that one presents. We also realize the artwork you present may be of considerable value; however, we are only able to accept monetary payments. If finances are a concern, please contact us to arrange a payment plan.
